Frequently asked questions
What if I need to find the original number, not just a percentage of it?

Can the percentage be more than 100%?
Yes. 150% of 40 is 60 — more than the original number. This is normal whenever the percentage represents growth beyond the whole, not just a portion of it.
Does the order matter in "X is what percent of Y"?
Yes, and it's the opposite of a symmetric comparison. The first number is always the part, the second is always the whole. Swapping them gives a different, usually wrong, answer — 45 is 15% of 300, but 300 is 667% of 45.
Is this the same as percentage change?
